20th Anniversary Celebration Conference

The Samora Institute is pleased to announce a conference celebrating its 20th anniversary as a Midwest Latino research institute. The 20th Anniversary Conference theme is “Latino/a Communities in the Midwest.”
The platinum conference will, over a one-and-a-half-day period, focus on issues affecting today's Latino populations in the Midwest. Conference attendees will be able to select from 18 different panels or presentations during the Friday and Saturday morning events, and will be treated to a Continental Breakfast each day. Participation in the Scheduled Plenary Lunch on Friday is optional, but the cost of the meal is included in the conference fee. An assortment of nationally-known and emerging scholars and researchers will make presentations and participate in panel discussions about some of the following topics:

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS OCT. 23, 2009
Registrations received after this date may not include meals because of seating capacities and registration limits. If so, the conference registration fee will be adjusted accordingly to offset the meal(s).
The Conference Fee, which includes a Continental Breakfast on Nov. 6 and Nov. 7 and a meal pass to the scheduled Plenary Luncheon on Nov. 6, is $150 per person. A Student Rate of $75 is available (student ID is required to receive discounted rate). Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, but on-site registration will be available if seating permits.

PLEASE NOTE: A special musical performance celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Julian Samora Research Institute is being held Thursday, Nov. 5, 2007 at 8 p.m. at the Music Building Auditorium on MSU's West Circle Drive. This is the Michigan premiere of ARMONIA, a crossover community project pioneeredby the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and MSU faculty member Ricardo Lorenz. This event is free and open to the public.

Friday, Nov. 6, 2009
Registration and a Continental Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. and, after acknowledgements and welcoming remarks, the first three 90-minute panels, events, or presentations begin at 8:30. Three additional events follow — beginning at 10:15 a.m. — and the lunch break is tentatively set for 11:45 a.m. -1:30 p.m.
After lunch, six additional panels are scheduled — three from 1:45-3:15 and three from 3:30-5:00 p.m. An evening reception for conference attendees and participants will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Kellogg & Conference Center.
Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009
A Continental Breakfast
from 7:30-8:30 a.m. begins the Saturday portion of the 20th Anniversary Celebration Conference. Six more panels or presentations — three from 8:30-10:00 a.m. and three from 10:15-11:45 a.m. — will round out the events. The Conference officially concludes at Noon.

A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the East Lansing Marriott at University Place at a special conference rate of $109 (tax not included). THE BLOCK OF ROOMS, AND THE CONFERENCE ROOM RATE, ARE BEING HELD UNTIL OCT. 14, 2009. After that — or until the rooms are gone — conference attendees may have to arrange for other billeting in East Lansing or Lansing. For those staying at the East Lansing Marriott at University Place, hotel transportation can be arranged to and from the Lansing Regional Airport. Various types of fee-based transportation from the Detroit or Grand Rapids Airports are also available (limousines, Michigan Flyer, etc.), but payment is the responsibility of the party contracting the service.

An Organizational Meeting of NCERA 216

Wednesday Evening and Thursday, Nov. 4 and Nov. 5, 2009
JSRI is hosting an organizational meeting of North Central Education/Extension and Research Activity 216 (NCERA 216) to organize collaborative research, education, and outreach opportunities on Latinos and Immigrants in Midwestern Communities. NCERA 216 is an interstate initiative that encourages and fosters multidisciplinary research, education, and outreach efforts on Latinos and immigrants in the region. It seeks to establish and maintain regional linkages among researchers and outreach specialists, promote community development, and develop plans to identify and obtain funding for single- and multi-state projects relating to Latinos and immigrants.
The NCERA event is being held from 5-8 p.m. on Nov. 4
and all day (8 a.m.-4 p.m.) on Thursday, Nov. 5.
THERE IS NO CHARGE TO ATTEND THIS EVENT
Faculty and Extension employees are invited to participate at the NCERA 216 meeting, as are members of Chicano/Latino Studies research centers and programs, and community organizations. Former members of the Midwest Consortium for Latino Research are also invited to participate. One need not be at a land grant institution to become a member of this initiative. There is no charge for this event.
