National Council of La Raza (NCLR)
The National Council of La Raza (NCLR)—the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States—works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Although Hispanics, especially Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans, participated in the civil rights movement, they did not gain widespread media coverage or national visibility for their efforts. NCLR was eventually created in response to a clear need for more local, grassroots programmatic and advocacy organizations, for a source of ongoing technical assistance to help coordinate and strengthen the work of local groups, and for national advocacy on behalf of Mexican Americans.
Tejano Entertainers & Music Association (TEMA)
The Tejano Entertainers & Music Association (TEMA) was founded to offer new visions, new directions, and new horizons for the Tejano entertainment and music industry in the new millenium.
TEMA's mission is to develop and produce a new world of Tejano entertainment and to pursue excellence through music, media, and the performing arts.
As we enter the 21st Century, Latinos are projected to become the largest minority in the United States. The new millenium presents tremendous opportunities and challenges for the Tejano entertainment industry throughout both hemispheres. TEMA is prepared to meet these challenges and offer creative forums and venues which will propel Tejano entertainment up to the next level of success.
The mere birth of TEMA on July 16, 1998, instantaneously expanded the Tejano music industry into a global opportunity for those involved in Tejano entertainment, including radio, television, film, performing arts, fashion, dance, music and media.
TEMA plans to develop and produce new state, national, and international forums and venues for Tejano entertainers to perform. Among the exciting plans for TEMA include the TEMA Awards, a six-cities entertainment tour in 1998, two entertainment spectaculars in Las Vegas with national and international radio and television syndication, the Golden Mic Awards for broadcasters, the Entertainment Media Awards, the Tejano Celebrity Fashion Show, a National Talent Search program, the Tejano Partners Membership program, and other fun-filled events in the future.
